A touch of country.

Please visit my site;  william-sews.com I’ve decided on a pattern for the denim shirt I want to make; it’s Simplicity 1327. I’ve already copied the pattern onto cardboard, so it’s ready to go. I shall make it in the blue fabric first, not much of a loss if it doesn’t work out. The pattern has a couple of different yoke treatments which should look good in denim, it also has a curved back yoke. I saved the image of another Western style shirt that I may like to make at a later date; I hope it’s still available. It’s a sad world now, let’s hope it will pass soon. We are going on a picnic this week, not to any of the beaches as they are closed but on the bluff above one of the main beaches (as long as there aren’t too many people). Time to get ready to sew, always a pleasure. Regards, Will.

Please visit my site at:  william-sews.com The next project will be a denim shirt; I have a length of mid-weight denim, but it will need to be slightly bigger than my usual shirts. I don’t know whether to add an extra 1 cm to the block pattern or use one of the older patterns. I have powder blue fabric left over from David’s jacket so will use it for a test run. If the pale blue sample works out OK I shall have two shirts for winter. I want to use it as an overshirt as well as just a shirt. Shopping is limited nowadays, which is alright for me except I will miss the op (charity) shops, I have loot from my last foray; Anchor threads from the UK, and Korbond – cotton-covered polyester thread from the US; it will be interesting to see how it sews, plus a few newer reels. I’m always delighted to find wooden reels. That’s my lot for today, Take care, Will. Share this:

Mellow yellow.

Please visit my site:  william-sews.com My new shirt; not mellow at all but I like it, yellow is my favourite colour. I’m not too impressed with my work, probably the messiest I’ve sewn for a while but it’s wearable. I can’t blame the fabric, it’s just me. It’s a light, silky fabric and is nice to wear. The above image is closest to the actual colour, so warm and sunny. I made a chevron shaped front yoke, I’ll use this again, I have denim to for a winter shirt and it’ll look good on that. I used the buttonhole attachment on my newest machine for the first time but an older machine does a better job, so I’ll go back to using it. That’s all for now, it’s becoming cooler, waiting for the Liquidambar leaves to turn red and gold…They make great mulch and look very colourful over the garden beds. Regards, Will.

New (old) patterns.

Called at a few charity shops today and actually  found a few patterns  –  no haberdashery unfortunately and I probably won’t use these patterns but they will be added to the collection. These aren’t great vintage patterns, they are impossible to find now, three  are dated 1986,1993 and 1999. The model wearing the brown t-shirt looks like Prince Charles. I may make the long sleeved one. Nothing exciting, perhaps the light coloured top in 1589, that’s from 1986, so will be a bit  puffy. These patterns are at least complete, I never check until I bring them home, after all,   they only cost 50 cents each. I hope to sew today. Regards, Will.

Old times.

I was looking through old photos and found a couple of me wearing clothes I made long ago. I used to be a straight, no nonsense dresser so the clothes haven’t dated too much. I made this shirt and trousers in the 1970s; a black shirt with rainbow cuffs and collar  –  a big collar, and black silky pants. That wallpaper! This was in the Blue Mountains in the 1980s, I made the shirt and trousers. I’ve always liked purple and have a length of purple batik which will be made into a shirt soon. This was in the days when trousers and jackets, etc. just weren’t long enough , eventually , ‘Long’ fittings were available and I stopped making everything but shirts. I liked making other clothing but the length of sleeves and the body of shirts was always (and still is) a problem. Nostalgia trip over, back to sewing. Regards, Will.

Familiar ground.

Back to shirts, this one is yellow; I like yellow but this colour is a bit  harsh—sometimes it’s softer and sometimes a biting yellow, depending on the light. We’ll see, it’s a piece of fabric I bought at a market, inexpensive, so no complaints. I’ll try a front yoke and pocket flaps this time, I haven’t sewn flaps for ages. Fun, fun, fun. Regards,  will

Mission Accomplished.

I’ve finished the Levi jacket and David wore it today. I took some terrible photos this morning, and this is the best of a bad lot. Back to shirts;  the next one is yellow. Regards, Will.
