Ready for a muslin, toile...

Please visit my site at  william -sews.com … or just a sample. I’ve copied and altered ALL the pattern pieces, it seemed like hundreds when I was working on it but it’s nineteen plus a button placement piece which I didn’t copy because the buttons will be spaced differently. I have a blue fabric piece that’s been hanging around for years which will work for the sample, it’s a similar weight to denim—and if it works out, I’ll have a powder blue jacket. These are the pattern pieces, in my size I hope, if any bits need altering, no problem.  I find this easier than trying to use the flimsy tissue pieces. This is the blue. I hope the pattern is alright because this would be a nice jacket. I also found this whilst rummaging and I may use it for a jacket or part thereof, (mutton dressed as lamb but I don’t care). I’m eager to start but have other, mundane things I must do first, perhaps I’ll be able to start later in the week. Regards,  Will.

Levi jacket pattern.

Please visit my site;  william -sews.com I’ve been working on the Levi jacket pattern  –  there are a lot of pieces; twenty all told  and I have four to go, then I can make a sample and see if my adjustments are alright. I’ve copied it onto Ram Board, pinning tissue paper onto fabric isn’t for me, it anything is wrong then I’ll just redo those pieces. I had to stay offline for a whole day because a storm passed over and a bolt of lightning destroyed a tree in the garden, bits flew off in every direction … it actually  exploded. I’ve never been close to lightning before nor do I want to be again. No animals were hurt and it missed the house, car and shed. It knocked out the modem and I had to buy another. Back to the four remaining pattern pieces. Regards,  Will.

Mr Levi Strauss.

Mr Levi Strauss. Please visit my site at  william -sews.com What have you done? Now I'll have to work hard instead of just making shirts...  I'll have to think for a change. I’ve cut around the pieces so they are easier to handle but will keep all the sizes intact in case I need to make another in a different size. I’ll be using the 42-44 pieces but will have to lengthen it  –  there is a shorten/lengthen line on the sleeves but nothing on the body so I’ll make up a sample and work out the best spot to add probably about 4-6 cm to the sleeve and body. I just don’t like to wear clothing that’s too short. Its been quite a while since I’ve worked with a paper pattern, I had rolls of Kraft paper but took it to the op shop this morning because I thought I’d never use it  –  how foolish is that? Anyway, this whole thing will be an adventure. There is a video on YouTube if I get stuck. I’ll copy the pieces I need straight onto the h...

Yoking

Image
Yoking. Please visit my site at  william -sews.com After the success of the curved yoke for my block shirt I’ve made a few more. The top piece is the curved back yoke I used on the last shirt, the curve wasn’t deep enough so I’ve redrafted it; I think it will work much better. This was the curved yoke  –  not much of a curve at all. I also made a chevron front and back yoke. Now I have to dream up a few other things to do with the block pattern, pocket flaps or panels, anything goes  –  maybe an extreme western yoke. I am looking forward to the Levi jacket pattern arriving, it’s due in the next two days. Regards,  Will.

A Levi jacket

Please visit and like my site;  william -sews.com A Levi jacket. Coming soon  –  although I’m still not sewing right now as there are too many distractions, the latest shirt is partially completed and I’m keen to get back to it. In the meantime I’ve ordered a Levi jacket pattern on eBay, I’ve looked for one at the big sewing shop in the city but no luck. I have to wait until the 14th for the pattern to be delivered … that should give me time to finish this darned shirt. This is the pattern; a traditional Levi jacket in sizes from XS to XL. I’ve made them in the past and it’ll be great to make another one… or two. I have denim I was going to use to make a shirt but may use it for this if I have enough. My plan is to eventually stray from just denim and use other materials, a new sewing adventure. NOW , of course,  I shall have to buy press studs for the front, cuffs and band. I hope one of my machines can cope, if the new ones can’t then I’m sure one...

Sewing and the environment.

Image
Please like and visit my site; w illiam -sews.com William-sews.com I’ve been following Peter Lappin’s blog, Male Pattern Boldness for some time and this week he posted about the environmental impact of home sewing. As far as fabric goes, I have very little waste, whatever I have left over from clothing goes into quilting. The smallest pieces I cut are 4cmx10.5cm (1.1/2″x3.1/2″), so not much left over, but I do like to sew with cotton which isn’t an environmentally friendly crop. I buy most of my fabric from op shops, same with my clothes  –  sheets are great for sewing as well These are my tiny pieces of fabric, (What a blurry photograph, too early in the morning) I use them to make ‘Roman Road’ quilts  –  they can’t get any smaller than this. I also give pieces to other quilters  as well , I’ve been doing that a lot lately because I haven’t been quilting  –  I have a backlog to finish. Anyway, I like fabric too much to throw any away. I ...
